Kenya boat accident: Unknown number of people feared dead – Red Cross

A rescue operation is underway in the Kenyan town of Ndau, located in the Lamu county area where Kenyan Red Cross reports that an unknown number of people are feared to have drowned after their boat capsized.

The Red Cross said it was liaising with the Lamu County officials on the rescue mission. The accident is believed to have occured on Tuesday morning.

They shared a photo breaking the news of the emergency response showing officials on two speed boats on the lake, apparently on the search operation.

Africa’s roads have recorded some of the worst transport accidents which has claimed scores of lives. Zimbabwe, Kenya, South Africa and Benin have all recorded deadly crashes in the recent past.

The most recent water-related accidents happened in Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Uganda. In the case of Uganda 30 members of a local football team and their supporters drowned after their boat capsized on Lake Alberta in western Uganda.

Ugandan police said the victims from the Kaweibanda village in the Buliisa district were heading to the neighboring district of Hoima for a friendly match.

Lake Albert, which is shared by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has faced several cases of boat wreckage.

In March 2014, 210 people died while others were missing after a boat carrying Congolese refugees from Uganda to the DRC capsized.
